California firefighters are fighting a series of catastrophic wildfires that have already taken at least five lives in Los Angeles. Authorities are cautiously optimistic as ferocious winds that fuelled the flames are expected to weaken slightly, offering a window for progress.

New Fire Sparks Fresh Evacuations

A new fire, dubbed the “Kenneth Fire,” broke out Thursday afternoon near the West Hills neighbourhood in Los Angeles, forcing further evacuations. The authorities immediately ordered evacuations as efforts to contain the fires intensified.

Curfews Enforced in High-Impact Areas

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna declared curfews in areas most significantly impacted by the two major fires. The curfew, implemented from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, will primarily fall within mandatory evacuation zones to guarantee public safety and prevent unauthorised entry.

Widespread destruction reported

According to Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, the Eaton area fire alone has destroyed over 4,000 structures, including homes, apartment complexes, commercial buildings, and vehicles. The fires have left trails of devastation behind, turning neighbourhoods into smouldering ruins.

Federal Assistance Mobilised

The fires are “the worst fires ever to hit Los Angeles,according to President Joe Biden, and he said there will be further federal funding allocated to California. On his directive, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell is coordinating with local officials and firefighters to assess immediate damage and relief needs.

NBA Postpones Game Amid Crisis

In the wake of the disaster, the NBA postponed the Los Angeles Lakershome game against the Charlotte Hornets, reflecting the broader impact of the fires on everyday life.

Fires Uncontrolled in Key Areas

Major fires are still burning in Pasadena, Eaton, and Sunset, but there isa 10% containment in Hurst. Most of these fires started on Tuesday and were fuelled by strong Santa Ana winds.

Fatalities Expected to Rise

The reported death toll so far is five, but officials are worried that it might increase further because rescue efforts continue and the damage extent is yet to be determined.
