A coastal security workshop was conducted at Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sardar Patel, Porbandar, earlier this week. The maiden workshop, aimed at creating awareness about the importance of coastal security among fishing community, was attended by over 50 fishermen and representatives from the State Fisheries Department. The event saw active participation of all stakeholders in ensuring coastal security along the Gujarat coast.
The Flag Officer Gujarat Naval Area addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of coastal security towards economic development of the Nation. Other speakers delivered talks on relevant topics like Life Saving Equipment at Sea, Handling Emergencies (including medical emergencies) at Sea and the assets available at the disposal of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard for ensuring coastal security.
In addition, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Porbandar delivered a talk on the crucial role the fishing community which could play in augmenting coastal security. The fishermen were also acquainted with naval Fast Interceptor Craft boats which were well received by them.
The workshop achieved the desired objective of sensitising the fishermen to act as “eyes and ears” for coastal defence and also made them realise their pivotal role in enhancing coastal security.
